How Divide works

We built Divide because finding a divorce attorney should not feel like a second full-time job. Here is exactly what to expect.

1. Search your area

Enter your ZIP code or city. Divide shows you every verified divorce attorney in your area, sorted by proximity, rating, and availability. Every attorney on the platform has been independently verified against their state bar record before appearing in results.

2. Read real reviews

Each attorney profile shows Google reviews pulled directly from their Google Business listing alongside reviews from verified Divide clients who completed a consultation. Both sources are clearly labeled so you always know where a review originates.

3. Schedule at no charge

Every attorney on Divide offers a free 30-minute initial consultation. You choose a time from their real calendar. A Zoom link is sent to your email immediately upon confirmation. Nothing is charged until you choose to engage an attorney directly.

4. You remain in control

After your consultation, the decision is entirely yours. If this attorney is the right fit, you proceed directly with them. If not, return to Divide and schedule with another. There is no fee and no obligation at any point in this process.

What attorney-client privilege means for you

From the moment you speak with an attorney, everything you share is legally protected. Attorney-client privilege means your attorney cannot disclose what you discuss, even if asked. This protection begins with your very first conversation, including the free consultation you schedule through Divide.

How we verify attorneys

Every attorney listed on Divide is verified against their state bar record before their profile is published. We confirm that their license is active and in good standing, that they are admitted to practice in the state where they are listed, and that their stated areas of practice reflect their professional history. Attorneys are re-verified annually.

How reviews work

Divide displays two sources of reviews on every profile. Google reviews are pulled from the attorney's public Google Business listing. Divide reviews are submitted by clients who booked and completed a consultation through our platform. Only verified clients may leave a Divide review. Both sources are clearly labeled.

Know your rights

Divorce law varies significantly by state. This page provides a plain-language overview of the most common areas. It is intended for general education and does not constitute legal advice.

Laws differ from state to state. The information below reflects general principles in the United States. For guidance specific to your situation, speak with a licensed attorney in your state. Your first consultation on Divide is always at no charge.
Equitable distribution

Most states divide marital property fairly, not necessarily 50/50. Courts look at the full picture before deciding what each spouse receives.

  • Length of the marriage
  • Each spouse's income and future earning potential
  • Who contributed what, financially and otherwise
  • Property owned before the marriage is typically separate
Child custody

Courts make custody decisions based on one standard: the best interests of the child. Two types of custody can each be awarded separately.

  • Physical custody — where the child lives day to day
  • Legal custody — who decides on school, healthcare, and upbringing
  • Joint arrangements are common and often preferred
Child support

Every state calculates support using its own formula, but the same core factors appear almost everywhere.

  • Both parents' gross income
  • How much time each parent spends with the child
  • Health insurance and childcare costs
  • Continues until adulthood unless a court modifies the order
Spousal support

Also called alimony or maintenance. It is not automatic — judges weigh several factors before awarding it.

  • How long the marriage lasted
  • Each spouse's current and future earning capacity
  • Financial sacrifices one spouse made during the marriage
  • Can be temporary, long-term, or denied entirely
Contested vs. uncontested

Knowing the difference helps set realistic expectations for cost and how long the process will take.

  • Uncontested — both agree on everything. Faster and far less expensive.
  • Contested — disputes go before a judge. More hearings, higher fees, longer timeline.
  • A skilled attorney often resolves contested cases before trial
Mediation

Often the fastest, least costly path to resolution. A neutral mediator helps both sides reach agreement without a courtroom.

  • Less adversarial than traditional litigation
  • Many courts now require it before a trial date is set
  • Agreements from mediation tend to hold up better long-term

Protecting yourself from the start

If you are considering divorce, one of the most important early steps is gathering documentation of your financial situation. This includes bank statements, tax returns, retirement account statements, mortgage documents, and records of any assets or liabilities. Having this information organized before you meet with an attorney allows the consultation to be more productive.

You do not need to have made a final decision before speaking with an attorney. Many people use an initial consultation simply to understand their options. Knowing what the process involves reduces uncertainty and puts you in a stronger position regardless of what you ultimately decide.

Child support estimator

This tool provides a general estimate based on commonly used income-share formulas. Results vary significantly by state and individual circumstance.

This calculator provides an estimate only and does not constitute legal or financial advice. Child support is determined by a court and depends on state-specific guidelines, the circumstances of each case, and judicial discretion. Speak with a licensed attorney in your state for guidance specific to your situation.

Estimate your child support

Enter monthly gross income for both parents and select a custody arrangement.

Estimated monthly support
This figure is an approximation based on income-share methodology. Actual support amounts are determined by a court and vary by state. An attorney can provide a more precise figure for your jurisdiction.

How child support is calculated

Most states use one of two models: the income shares model, which considers the income of both parents, and the percentage of income model, which applies a fixed percentage to the paying parent's income. The income shares model is more common and is the basis for the estimate above.

Beyond base income, courts may also factor in health insurance premiums paid on behalf of the children, childcare costs related to employment, and any special or extraordinary expenses. These additions can meaningfully affect the final figure.

Child support orders can be modified if there is a substantial change in circumstances, such as a significant change in income, a change in the custody arrangement, or a change in the child's needs.

Divorce is one of the most consequential legal processes a person will ever navigate. The decisions made during this time affect finances, living arrangements, and in many cases the daily lives of children for years to come. The quality of legal representation matters enormously, yet the process of finding a qualified attorney has remained unnecessarily opaque.

Divide was created to change that. We built a platform where verified attorneys present their credentials, their fees, and their availability transparently. Where real client reviews are displayed alongside publicly available Google ratings. Where someone can schedule a free consultation in minutes.

We are not a law firm. We do not provide legal advice. We are a directory and scheduling platform that removes the friction between people who need legal help and attorneys who are qualified to provide it.

How we verify attorneys

Every attorney on Divide is verified against their state bar record before their profile is published. We confirm that their license is active and in good standing, that they are admitted to practice in the state where they are listed, and that their stated areas of practice reflect their professional history. Attorneys are re-verified annually.

Everything you share during a consultation with an attorney on Divide is protected by attorney-client privilege from the moment that conversation begins. Divide does not sell or share your personal information with third parties. Your data is used solely to facilitate the connection between you and the attorneys on our platform.

Information we collect

When you search for an attorney, we collect your ZIP code or city. When you schedule a consultation, we collect your name, email address, phone number, and any information you voluntarily provide about your situation. We use this information solely to facilitate the scheduling of your consultation and to send confirmation and reminder communications.

How we use your information

We do not sell your personal information to third parties. We do not use your information for advertising purposes unrelated to Divide.

Terms of Service

Effective January 1, 2026. Last updated May 12, 2026.

By accessing or using the Divide platform, you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service. If you do not agree to these terms, please do not use the platform.

Nature of the service

Divide is a directory and scheduling platform. We connect individuals seeking legal representation with licensed divorce attorneys. We are not a law firm. We do not provide legal advice. Nothing on this platform constitutes legal advice, and no attorney-client relationship is formed with Divide through your use of this platform.

Attorney-client relationships

Any attorney-client relationship you form is solely between you and the individual attorney you engage. Divide facilitates the scheduling of consultations but is not a party to any legal representation agreement. Attorneys listed on Divide are independent legal professionals and are not employees or agents of Divide.

Free consultations

Initial consultations scheduled through Divide are provided at no charge by the participating attorney. Following the consultation, any engagement of an attorney's services is subject to a separate fee agreement between you and the attorney. Divide is not a party to that agreement and does not receive any portion of attorney fees.

Accuracy of information

We verify attorney credentials against state bar records at the time of listing and on an annual basis. We do not guarantee the accuracy of attorney-provided information including stated specialties, experience, or availability. Reviews represent the opinions of individual clients and are not endorsed by Divide.

Cancellations

You may cancel a scheduled consultation at any time. As a courtesy to attorneys, we request that cancellations be made at least 24 hours in advance of the scheduled appointment.
